The Department of Anatomy in the Andhra Medical College was established in the month of July 1923. The first Professor who taught Anatomy was Capt. F.J. Anderson was also the officiating Principal of Andhra Medical College. The Anatomy Department started with a humble primitive structure with a zinc sheet for its roof, later grew to its present size. The present Block was then inaugurated in 1962. The strength of students admitted increased from 32 at the time of inception to 150 in 2002. The MSc. Post Graduate course in Anatomy was started in 1935. Later, it was changed to MS Anatomy. From the year 2002, it has been changed to MD Anatomy. Over 14 Post Graduate candidates have been awarded MS from this department. The Department of Anatomy has a museum, which is one of the best in South India. Among its prized possessions are two artificial human skeletons - one made of ivory and the other of wood. These skeletons were donated by Dr R. Krishna Rao. The department also houses a well-equipped 'Cytogenetics Lab'. MEDALS/PRIZES: Dr S. Swaminatham Prize is awarded to a regular student for the best dissection performed.Dr Anderson Medal for Anatomy is awarded to the student who passes in the first attempt, securing the first rank in the University examinations with not less than 66% marks. |

The department is equipped with an air conditioned dissection hall, a histology lab and enough facilities for self-study besides a highly qualified faculty to guide the students. An air-conditioned computer room with four computers containing all the anatomy lectures in PowerPoint presentation form, many text books and labeled photographs of all museum specimens and models have been added to the Department. An ultramodern histology laboratory with projection facilities is also a recent acquisition. The Department is in the process of starting a cytogenetic laboratory for providing to clinical departments facility of detection of chromosonal abnormalities.
Laboratories equipped for research in neuroanatomy, osteology, histology, gross anatomy and anthropometry and cytogenetics are available for staff and postgraduate students.
The Department participates in teaching of MBBS, MD Anatomy, B.Sc. (Medical Technology) Radiography, B.Sc. Physiotherapy, Medical Lab. Technology (one-year in-service) course, and Laboratory Attendants training (six-week in-service) course. The Department offers assistance to other departments in conducting CME courses from time to time like neurosurgery and ENT. Major thrust areas of research are a) effect of drugs on morphology, b) neuroanatomy including tract-tracing histomorphomology, and c) anthropometry.
