The Department of Paediatrics was set up in 1956. Dr P. Tirumala Rao was the first Professor. The Second Unit was set up in 1966, October. A nursery for premature babies was opened in 1957. A community Pediatrics Unit was started in 1982. The department also has an Intensive Paediatric Care Unit.

Diploma in Child Health was started in 1957 and the MD Pediatrics Course in 1963. More than 225 doctors have been awarded their Postgraduate DCH/MD degree from the department.

The department has a library of its own. Several papers have been presented by the department.

PRIZE: Ramamurthy Memorial Prize is awarded to meritorious students.
