The Department of Otorhinolaryngology was started in the year 1935 with Rao Bahadur Dr B. Tirumala Rao as the first Head of the Department and Lecturer at the department. This was one of the only two ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) departments in the composite State of Madras. In 1959, ENT was a separate examination paper conducted for MBBS students in the final year and a post of Professor was created with Dr P. Narasimha Rao officiating. Post graduate courses commenced in 1942 and over 180 students were awarded PG MS or DLO Diploma degree till the year 2002.

Presently, there are two units serving over 70,000 Out Patients and 8,000 In Patients each year at the Department of ENT. Over 6,000 major and 5,000 minor operations including Microsurgery are performed every year. The department also conducts regular workshops and has several papers to its credit.
