In 1985, the Vth Medical Unit was converted into Department of Nephrology with one Professor and one Assistant Professor. A Renal laboratory and Dialysis unit were also sanctioned. The first professor was Dr Girish Narayan. The department has 16 beds for inpatients and five beds for dialysis patients. The department has an Out Patient on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Department of Nephrology has several papers from its alumni to its credit. It provides training to undergraduates and post graduates from medicine, paediatrics and gynaecology.
