The Department of Microbiology was started in the year 1925 with Rao Bahadur Dr Rama Murthy as the first professor and Head of the Department. The facilities at the department were upgraded in 1973. The center for AIDS surveillance was started in 1986. The department is doing HIV/AIDS sentinel surveillance as per NACO guidelines under the control of AP State AIDS Control Society. A voluntary counselling and training center for HIV/AIDS was started in 2001. Several workshops are also being conducted. The department has over 150 papers to its credit. It has been provided with FACS counter recently for CD4 count. The Department of Microbiology has a museum and an exclusive library.

PRIZE: Dr C. Rama Murty memorial prize examination is held for the students on an annual basis.
