The
Department of Biochemistry was set up as an
independent and full-fledged department during
the year 1925 with Dr V.K. Narayana Menon
as the first professor. The Biochemistry department
was part of the Physiology department for
several years unlike the other colleges where
these two departments function individually.
In the department of Biochemistry, students
have experimented on various topics and performed
several projects on hemoglobinopathies, iodine
deficiency and pollution, which were carried
out successfully at the department. The students
also produced several papers. The department
has a museum of its own. The department provides
Biochemical services to King George Hospital
and surrounding Teaching Hospitals.
The 24-hour clinical laboratory
is a recent addition to the department with
conventional and specialised tests.
