The Department
of Anaesthesiology was started in the year 1931
at the Andhra Medical College. Dr Hari Rao,
FRCS, was the first Head Of the Department.
The Diploma in Anaesthesiology (DA) was started
in the year 1966 under the aegis of Andhra University,
Waltair and a Degree course in Anaesthesiology
was started in the year 1971. An intensive care
unit (ICU) was started during the year 1983.
The number of PG seats for DA are 8 and for
MD there are 4 seats every year. The department
is the biggest in Andhra Medical College and
King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam. There are
4 units in the department of Anesthesiology;
each unit is headed by one professor. There
are four Associate Professors and 15 Assistant
professors. The number of operation theatres
(OTs) are 10 including Cardio-thoracic surgery
and open-heart surgery started in 1999. Regular
teaching programmes are being conducted in the
form of journal clubs, lectures, seminars, group
discussions, morbidity and mortality meetings.
The Department is equipped with the latest international
journals and periodicals and has comprises facility
of computers. |
